Understanding the Nature of The Horse

By nature the horse was intended to live in grassy fields with natural protection through trees and the landscape from the elements. The horse lived in herds and most herds were groups of mares with one stallion for protection. As technology advanced and we began to rely on the horse more and more, we began to change the way the horse lives. The horse was stabled and shod and moved away from the grassy fields to barns and stables in cities. This was a drastic change for the horse and he has had to overcome many of his natural instincts for this new way of life.

Understanding Why Your Cat Stalks

By their very nature, cats are excellent hunters who thoroughly enjoy stalking their prey. For domesticated cats, their “prey” can be something as simple as an insect or a wind up toy. But, is it always healthy and normal for a cat to stalk, or is there ever a reason to be concerned about a stalking cat?

As I commented even domesticated cats have the natural instinct to hunt and to stalk. With an indoor cat, stalking generally speaking is not an indication of hunger. More likely they are stalking their prey out of curiosity or because they simply need to add a little excitement to their lives. Hunting and stalking also helps the cat to get a little exercise and also provides a release for pent up energy.

Understanding What a Paint Horse Is, and How to Identify One

Paint horses did not get their name because their riders and owners tend to be creative types who stabled them in their private studio. Paints did not get their name because they possess some unique creative gift of their own.

Instead, paint horses got their name for a far more obvious reason: in every case, whether their pattern falls into the Overo, Tobiano or Tovero category, the horse is marked by some percentage of white hair over un-pigmented skin in addition to another color: brown, tan, black or gray. The Paints’ markings don’t have any set location or size, they can appear anywhere on the horse’s body.

How a Horse Travels – Understanding Different Loading Styles

Horse trailers come in several different loading and shipping styles. Each style offers advantages and disadvantages to the owner and the horse. When purchasing a horse trailer it is important to consider which style best suits you and your horse.

Straight Load

This is the most common load style. In a straight load trailer, horses are brought in from the back and are tied side-by-side, facing the front of the trailer. There is usually a partition in the middle of the trailer, protecting the horses from banging into one another. Some straight loads have partitions to the ground, while others only have bars to separate the horses. You can also get partitions that separate the horses at the front of the trailer so that they cannot bite one another.

Understanding What Your Dog Is Saying By Reading His Body Language

Although dogs are quite vocal animals, their main form of communication either with humans or their own species is through non-verbal signals or what we more popularly call body language.

Non-verbal messages can be both overt and very subtle; think of the enumerable non-verbal messages you send and receive during the course of an interaction with another human being. In fact human behaviour experts suggest that over 80% of our communication with each other is ‘understood’, by us interpreting the non-verbal behaviours during a conversation.

Understanding the Art of Buying a Good Horse

Anyone looking through a list of horses for sale needs to have a strong sense of what they are looking to buy. When buying horses in Texas, or anywhere else, most people are going to find right off the bat that they are not just looking for “a brown horse,” they are going to be looking for horses that will serve a particular purpose.

Cattle Horses

When some people look to buy horses, it is because they have a ranch and they need to have a horse that will allow them to keep up with a herd of cattle. Other people still view horses as an inexpensive mode of transportation that will enable them to move from one place to another with relative ease, despite the surrounding terrain. In other cases, people will be shopping for horses that will be workers – that will help to keep the herd together, move supplies, or even help pull the truck out of the mud.

Understanding the Importance and Popularity of The American Quarter Horse

Quarter Horse seems like a strange name for an animal, but only until you understand that Quarter horses are able to run a quarter mile faster than any other horse can run the same distance (in some situations, a Quarter Horse has been recorded at over 50 miles per hour while running at full speed), then its given name makes good sense. In part, that is a testament to the horse’s athletic ability, along with its strong, well-muscled hind legs.

Combine versatility and an even temper with those characteristics (athleticism and muscle structure) and you can see why Quarter Horses are some of the most popular choices among those who are buying from a list of horses for sale. Not only is the American Quarter Horse common with a lot of general buyers, but the breed is popular overall; the majority of horses registered worldwide are registered with the American Quarter Horse Association.

Understanding Unusual Fish Behavior

Have you ever watched your fish as they swim around in your tank and wondered why they do the things that they do? While no one can be certain of why fish do all of the things that they do, experts do agree on the meaning of a few fish behaviors. As a fish owner, the better you can identify and understand these behaviors, the happier and healthier you can make your pet fish.

Hiding in the Tank

Many fish enjoy hiding and, therefore, this is not always a cause for concern. Some fish are just naturally shy and like to hideaway from other fish. Similarly, a fish that has recently bore young may have a tendency to hide with its babies in order to keep them protected. If you have recently introduced the fish to your tank, it may also have a tendency to hide until it becomes comfortable with its surroundings. On the other hand, some fish will seclude themselves if they are suffering from disease. Therefore, you should watch the coloring of the fish and the overall behavior in order to make certain the hiding is not part of a larger problem.
